I have the tie rod out and have the ends taken apart and cleaned out. The problem I'm having is I can't get the tie rod end ball into the socket. Are there any tips or tricks to reassemble the original style tie rods.
I went with the original style over new style tie rods because I have them flipped under the steering arms and just easier- or so I thought. Thanks for the help,

Then put it over the ball. The ball should go in the large opening & slide back. Then put in the other cup in the hole & the screw. Tighten the screw till it bottoms out & back it off a little. Move the joint back & forth to seat it & tighten the nut again & back it off enough to line up the cotter pin hole.

| | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | I had the same problem when I rebuilt mine ,I ground just a little of the sharp edge off the inside cup were the ball had to go in than I used a C clamp to pop it in.If you look at the old one you'll see the new one comes to a point on both sides where they ground the ball out and the old ones are dressed at the cup where the ball goes in .

I guess I never knew you could get un-tapered new style tie rods or I would have bought those instead- may still do that anyway if they're not too pricey.

If you do decide to use the originals, chuck the ball in a drill and lap the cups to fit. You will be surprised how much better they will work.
