The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk 1/2 ton coupe ?

Browsing thru "Heritage Archives" - they list a "1/2 ton coupe" for 1938, which is basically a business coupe with a removable bed. Anyone ever seen one of these?

It's called a coupe pickup. I've seen lots of pictures but never in person. I had a line on a bed for my coupe but it was too far away to make it worth while.

Same here - I never knew it existed - will be watching Hemmings and EBay - who knows ---maybe --just maybe - one will show up. So looks like - if you had the coupe maybe the bed could be added??? or maybe fabricated.

For whatever reason, these things are pretty rare. If one shows up for sale, it will be interesting to see how it is priced.
When I was a kid, I remember seeing one on the street. It is the only time I've ever seen one. All I can remember about it is that it was green. I also remember thinking to myself that it wasn't "right" to see a truck bed in the trunk of a car.

I read an article on these in ,I think, Vintage Truck, although I can't locate the article at the moment. I do remember the author stating that it was nearly impossible to find an original bed and if he did , it would have a staggering price just for the bed. Restorers have to custom build the bed in most cases.

The few folks who have them are plenty proud of them $$$$. There are a few around but the really hard to find part is the panel below the bed that fills in where the spare tire goes. There's a coupe pickup magazine article on ebay right now. The author had to have that panel fabricated because he couldn't find one in any condition at any price.

There is a retired American Airlines pilot that lives about 20 miles from my shop that has one that he bought (used) when he was 16 years old. The gas station he worked at used it for a service car. It was his very first car and he also has the second car he ever owned, a 37 2dr. He also has a 37 business coupe and a 37 2T truck with a roll back bed to haul them on. If only I had been smart enough to keep some of the first cars I ever owned.

Those are rare for sure,but I just couldn't do that to a car.It looks like a pickup cost less back in the day.I wonder how rusted out those cars became with out the deck lid on ?

Tim, those beds were easily removable and the deck lid could be put back on if the owner took the time. As a consequence the beds sad out in the weather alot and deteriorated before the trunk area of the coupe. There were very,very few of these sold,just a few hundred, and even less that survived. They weren't on the market very long.

Drew,Any of those around you in Jersey? I have never seen one around here!

I have seen writeups on them but not on a GM vehicle. That would be pretty neat to have.
