Hello, How can you tell if the engine is a 292 or a 250? I just bought a 1968 6cyl.engine out of a 1 ton truck the block number are 3921988 If anyone can help me out with info? Thanks, Jerry in Tennessee

A 292 will have taller Side Covers, approx 6 inches tall. Also the Motor Mounts will be staggerd instead of even across. On a pad by the distributor, you will find the Engine Code. Post the code and we can tell you more about the engine.

The casting number posted doesn't come up on Inliners. Closest one is 3921968 (easy mistake to make) which could be either a 230 or a 250 from '64-'76 used in Chevrolet or Oldsmobile applications. The serial number from behind the distributor will be a better indicator of what it is and where it came from originally, as there is a possability it wasn't original to the truck it came from.

Check fuel pump location, 230,250 is in the front, 292 is in the middle of the engine.

292;s will have a heavy duty looking water pump with extra hoses and a bigger harmaonic dampner (3 or 4 pulley grooves).

250 or 230? The numbers I got behind the dis. were F0430TF or maybe T0430TF was is the difference between these engines? are parts interchangeable? The motor I have came out of a 1968 one ton flatbed I was thinking it may be a 292 but the fuel pump is closer to the front. If anyone can help me with the I.D. no need for numbers on this one. just look at the lifter gallery covers or fuel pump/motor mount location on pass side. if the covers are 6" it's a 292 if the are 4" it's a 250. if the motor mounts are straight across from each other it's a 250 if the pass side one is foward a bit, it's 292. i have had people argue casting numbers before when i bought a engine, i don't even try any more. as long as you know what you got it's fine.soon you will be able to spot them from a mile away. now a 230 and a 250, different story!

i doubt it's a 230 they stopped making them in '64, i think. they had 20 less cubic inched, i think they had a flat or at least less resessed piston. so which is it 250 or 292???

The TF code is for a 250 with the 4 speed and HD clutch. The first part of the code is the plant source, usually F is Flint Michigan and T is Tonawanda New York. No real differences in the engines other wise. The next part is day/month the engine was built.
