what is the correct lube for the 4-speed tranny and the rear end in the '58 Apache??

for my muncie 420,they say to use gl-4,not gl-5

I think the SM420 and a Muncie 420 are the same thing. The quandary over which gear lube to use has to do with the amount of sulphur (anti-wear) in the product. The brass synchronizers react with sulphur and are eroded.

If you use the incorrect lube, my guess would be that in about 99 years you might see a problem. grin

I believe Novak Transmissions, who deal with this box quite a bit recommend GL-5. This oil thing is Voodoo territory.

My manual states SAE 90 multipurpose gear lubricant. Personally, I'm using Lucas full synthetic 75w90, with a 70/30 mix of the Lucas gear oil and Lucas oil stabilizer in the trans.
