Things are fast paced now, only waited 2 months for the vent window glass to arrive. Now that it is here I'm trying to install the glass into the frame using the "glass setting tape". It is not going well as I have the rubber mallet pounding quite hard against the edge of the glass and its not entering the frame. Just the top and bottom are starting to enter the frame....it needs to side in more towards the vertical portion of the frame.

Just had a thought, am I installing the setting tape backwards? I'm putting the rubber side against the glass and the fabric side against the frame. Is this correct?

Should I forget the setting tape and use some kind of caulk? If so, what?

Don't know if this will help, but I did all the windows in my 54....used Classic American parts replacement vent windows and setting tape. They said to use the tape as it came off the roll....the rubber on the glass, fabric towards the frame. Cut off ample tape, SOAK IT for 10 minutes in motor oil, using the glass like a shoehorn, press in the glass to seat it.

A couple things I discovered on my own...the CAP glass was a bit thinner than the original (I got the tinted stuff)...you're best to have the wing window mounted in the frame so you can close it up and make sure the back vertical edge fits properly against the vertical seal in the frame. I moved it around until the glass was properly positioned and locked the latch down....next day the glass was tight. Trimmed the excess tape and I was good to go.

My replacement glass is .235 thick and the setting tape .045 thick. You didn't mention if you were soaking the tape but IT IS A MUST. Makes a big mess but my windows are secure and fit properly. Hope this is some help!

Houston54 You may have missed your calling....what a professional writeup and pics. After my post, I did a search on "vent window" (my first search was on "wing window") and found some very good information. So I did one vent window using what infro I could find. Today, I will use your description and expect far better results than on my first attempt. I'm concerned about my first attempt as I have pounded the window seemingly as far as it will go and there is about 3/16" reveal. Fitting it into the new weatherstripping will show what my next step should be. Heres hoping it will be OK.

Here is a tip i used to remove the vent glass from the frame. I picked up a heat gun from Home Depot for 10 bucks in the paint dept. The same gun in the tool section was 19.99. Anyway I turned the gun on high and played the heat around the frame, inside and out. In just a few moments the tar softened and I just pulled the old glass out. Useing the gun and a screwdriver in tandem I scooped out most of the remaining setting tape. A few minutes with a solvent and the frame was clean as a whistle.

I need some help on installation of new wing windows. There is a post by anonymous(houston54) that lists a url website detailing how he did his. I cannot open it. Each time I try it tells me the file name cannot be found. Can someone help me?
