Looking for info and specs on the ad suburban???? I recently picked up a 1949 chevrolet suburban its my first and i have alot of ?'s. On weather this and that is stock and or not stock. I figured if I had a resouce or link to the factory specs i could keep referncing it instead of asking a million ?'s, like are all suburban's saposed to have the drivers side cowl vents? mine doesnt, the slot on iside is there but no handle, do you was it removed by someone?? Is the gas tank just below the half way mark on the front side of the tank saposed to have a lIne going into it??I have pics for reference if needed?? Tony, I'm going to be a bit a pain in your butt here. This place can be an incredible resource, BUT, you will get the most information when you "Speak" in clear legible sentences, use punctuation and take the time to formulate a question that can be answered. This format is tough enough when people CAN make out what you are trying to say. Try not to make it even harder.
Your first question relates to the more common pickups as well. You might look into the gallery pages for your year and see if indeed a '49 Chevy pickup has the driver's side cowl vent. (It does by the way). Later years did away with the vent. As for the next question, someone with more mystical powers will have to summon up an answer for you, because I don't have a friggin clue as to what your asking.:)

another very helpful tool for me was/is the assembly manual. It shows a lot of stuff and is a good buy at 20-$25. Money well spent.

EDITED my stuff for you and i know the vent was deleted on later year trucks. My ? was did all 1949 suburbans have them?

The left-side cowl-ventilator was last used on 1950 trucks. In 1951, the "ventipanes" in the doors provided air to the cab, and the cowl-ventilator was eliminated.

The after-market replacement cowl panels are not made with a vent. It is possible your cowl has been replaced.

Ok thanks, i figured it might have got shaved off at some point and time thats why i was wondering if it was saposed to be on he 1949 suburbans or not? and does anyone else have this hose coming out of their gas tank? if so is it correct and or does anybody know whats its for? i saw a used gas tank on ebay that guys said his had it too??

When it came from the factory,it had a steel line from the tank to the fuel pump.You can buy them from the vendors,or make your own.

So the tank fed out the side like in the pic? from the factory?

I have the same thing on mine

Here is what I did. Buy a ROLL of steel line. I used 3/8 but it was originally smaller. I unrolled it the length I wanted plus a little extra. Flared one end and slide it up the chassis rail and attached it to the fuel pump. Next I put a fitting into the tank that I could slide a small SHORT piece of hose on. After sliding the SHORT piece of hose on I then attached a filter to the short rubber hose, then another Short piece of hose from filter to the main line. The line is all one piece except where the filter is and if ever a problem the filter is easy to change.

It looks really neat and should last a lifetime and the short rubber hose should also last longer than we do.

oh, I got my coil of line at Carquest. I think it was 25ft and cost $26. You'll have a little left for another project.

Thanks for the pics and the info guys helps me out alot i was scratching my head quite a bit looking at that line mid tank LOL

There is a pick up tube on the inside of the tank,runs to the bottom.

That makes sense now i figured it fed thru the top like most newer cars and trucks did this is my first ad suburban i had some ad truck before but they where all projects and never saw the road while i owned them

The 1954 A-D Suburban (and all 1954/55-1st series panel body trucks) had a different fuel tank - the pick-up tube and the sender was single assembly that went through one hole in the top of the tank (like the "newer cars and trucks" that bigtony55 refers to).

Im leaning toward the cowl being replaced like you said, I stuck a flashlight into the slot where the handle would be, and I dont see any seam where the old vent would have been and its all flat black in there like most other repop metal i have seen is.

Like bowtietim said, that is your gas line. Probably couldn't get it apart so they cut it in two and slipped the rubber hose on to put it back together.
