I have always had an obsession with old vehicles and have a small collection of them myself. I am yearning for a 4wd K30 or something of the sorts. In the mean time I am obsessed with the old Eaton axles. I have an itch for them that I just seem to buy them whenever I come across one. IMHO they are the best designed truck axle and its a shame they stopped producing them and went to the 14 bolt.

Anyways, good luck and have fun here! Thanks! Already folks seem great on this forum. I dig them out of '46 - '72 3/4 Ton and 1 Ton trucks. I am in the process of building my own version of the Napco front axle except instead of closed ball knuckles I am using Dana 60 King Pin knuckles. I have one in a 4 link setup in my Jeep already. Awesome axles. And yea, I have them in pieces in my shop, some assembled outside, some on racks in my seperated shop, and even a few at my grandparents farm. Heck, as I type this I am getting ready to go out in my shop and finish cleaning up a 4.10 third.

Question: Do you find any Eaton's with lockers? I guess they are rare.

There were some of these axles with factory No-Spin lockers manufactured under the "Trach-tech" name by Eaton. Later the differentials were upgraded to the Detroit name when full case lockers became available for other applications outside of the factory Eaton. The original no-spin is still being replicated by many many other companies. The cheapest way to install one of these aftermarket lockers is to aquire a set of GM 14 bolt axle shafts of similar length to the housing you have, whether it be a DRW or SRW housing. The shafts are 1/4" or so too long to work properly, in some applications, but have been known to slide right in for other folks. Some just use a chop saw to cut the ends off square but if you know ANYTHING about axle shaft spline theory you would know this is a BAD idea. Instead shims should be used behind the flange between the hub and gasket to offset the shaft to keep it from bottoming out on the housing.
