The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Gas Tank leaks

I have a farm tank that I purchased at auction and it had some leakage around the outlet. After sandblasting and painting it I am now ready to put it to use but want to be sure the leak is stopped. I replaced the reducer bushing which was very short with a new one and used pipe dope on the threads. As for the welded tank bung I want to put something on it but don't know what is best. If anyone has some experienced advice from your old Chevy truck tanks I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Dave, short of pouring in some sealer I'd suggest a good coat or two of POR15. After cleaning my 37 tank it had several pin holes. I ended up using the sealer kit inside and then put a good coat of POR15 on the outside....that was over 10 years ago and I have never had any problems of any kind out of my tank and I do drive my truck quite regularly.

I might add that on my 37 the tank sits down under the seat, I can take the cap off and look straight down into the tank. The sealer looks as good and smooth, no signs of any cracks, as the day I poured it in.

I bought a reproduction tank that is a metric fitting (nice touch jerks)for my 50' and after repeated attempts to seal I used J-B weld on it. Leak sealed!
