The reason for it is often guessed at but I�ve never seen it backed up till now.

One of our bolters was kind enough to turn me on to the 1936 utube of the GM assembly line. Along with it are a bunch of other videos; the particular film I�m referring to describes the prewar vacuum shift feature on the cars. In one scene two women and a child get into the front seat of a sedan. The narrator points out that another new improvement has been made by taking the control levers from the floor and placing them on the dash. He says this has made more room and comfort for the driver and front seat passengers, and now since they can enter and exit the side away from traffic, more safety for all.
This would tend to give credence to the theory that the outside door locks on the trucks were installed only on the passenger side for safety reasons.

They tried to sell the sliding back window for safety, too. But too many fell between the cab and the bed. Seeing the bottom of the boots proved that.

Yeah Chip, I'm sure there are a few more films around like those. Good thing they haven't surfaced though, I'm like you, I got sucked into watching a few hours of them. I just love to see how those guys did things back then. I always did like to watch other people work! Been hoping someone would dig up some of those old films showing how they painted and assembled the AD‘s, but, they still haven't dug them out yet.

I'm still waiting to get my short block back from the engine shop. In the mean time I'm finally, after 25years, gonna hook up the gas to the barn. Been heating with wood in a barrel stove for all them years. Hopefully this winter after I light the fire and come in for breakfast the barn will be nice and warm and ready for me a half hour later.
I've also got a 2hp 48" Bridgeport mill I have to restore before I can get back to some serious work on the '50.

I like how he was handling mercury like it was water. Nowadays they would have called hazmat and evacuated the building, if not the town!
