I put disc brakes on my 52 and was planning on trying to put a master/booster in. Either under the floor or through the dash. The under the floor I keep hearing cannot be done with the stock transmission and that the clutch gets in the way. I thought I found a thread on this before. Then I was looking at using a donor through the wall brake pedal and found that the location and the steering column is in the way. I see that they make a through the column mount, but the price is a bit high was wondering if anyone has come up with some other solution.
Engine 216 Stock manual transmission truck was a 1 ton is now a 1/2 ton. BTW I have some weird looking canisters under the cab beneath the passenger seat, could be a pump of some sort. Any one know what it was on a 1 ton? Thank you | | | | | | ZooKeeper Unregistered | | ZooKeeper Unregistered | What I have seen done is to move the booster & master cylinder back & extend the rod that comes off the stock pedal assembly to the booster/mc. I'm trying to find a pic of this set up...joe | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 | They're are kits available that place the m/c about a foot away from the pedal assembly as Joe(Zookeeper) mentions, but as yet,I haven't seen one for an AD truck. I'm running an auto trans so haven't had to deal with this problem. Here's one i've seen for an earlier Chevy,I'm not sure if it could be adapted to fit. It will give you the general idea though.

The firewall mount is the other one that has me baffled I was actually thinking of taking the foot brake and by welding on another box to the mount to the wall put a long screw that can turn when the pedal is pushed doing what it does now but along side the current setup. Ok I can visualize it haha. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 | Engineered Components Inc. in Connecticut makes the bracket assembly that you are looking for to put the Master Cylinder/Booster under the floor. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | Someone used a hydraulic clutch I believe. The archives here should help.

There was a lot of room under there by the brakes and I could not find anything but a flex line that went to my manual transmission. I moved that line around and it flexed all over the place. I am just wondering since it was a 1 Ton truck originally would that make a difference, being that it is a 4 speed vs the 1/2 ton 3 speed? Will this make the job easier and do I need all the fancy setups or can I just install a standard under the floor setup. Thoughts?
The one thing that seemed to be getting close to being in the way was the parking brake line.

My issue is the transmission cross member. The master cylinder goes through the cross member. I am not sure if anyone else has done this but I modified the cross member to allow for room. I will see if I can get a pic up for you to look at. I don't know about you guys, but keeping the stock pedal/feel is what I really wanted out of my truck.

Did not need to modify anything other than drill 3 holes. I was amazed how well it went into place I thought it would be a nightmare and it turned out to be probably the easiest retrofit that I have done.
Although the setup was bought from American Classic Truck Parts it actually was dropped shipped from CPP. I have to say I am extremely pleased that I did not need to modify anything this time around. Now I just need to run the lines and I should have brakes again. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | MC and booster install is a major discussion item here, What truck did you put it in. How about some pictures?

If thats the case the hole for the m/c were probably different than my 52panel. I used m/c-booster from PirateJack out of Asheville, N.C. and it was a direct bolt in. All the stuff I needed at a good price and I didn't have to drill one hole. I did have to cut the brake pedal hole out about 1/4' at the top....and as I said above I had to modify my crossmember but maybe that was just because of the crossmember itself and not because of the choice of systems?
Jackyl, be sure and bench bleed the m/c real good because sometimes they can be a pain to get all the air out! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 197 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 197 | That is correct it was a 52 1 ton that is now cut down to a 1/2 ton. I could not be more pleased with the install. I have it test fitted now, but plan on pulling it all out again to bleed it and get everything going. Just having brakes again will make me happy considering now it is very hard to stop when I back it out of the garage. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | ...rather than pull it out to bleed make you up a couple short plastic lines and just turn the ends back into the reservoir. Its a lot simplier/easier than pulling it back out and you can keep and reuse the lines on something else..... I actually had some metal lines that I curved right back into the m/c. Just and idea. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 46 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 46 | Can you use that set up if you are running headers and a v 8 chevy 700 r 4 combo???? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 197 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 197 | Probably not, I am using a stock setup. The only difference I have is that I do not have 3 on the column but a 4 speed on the floor because it was a 1 ton.
Plus I do not have any transmission supports in the way. The only issue I have is the speedo cable and that is flexible. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Superfly, what truck chassis are you using? Not that it makes any difference but it might?? I'm running headers on my 350 with 700R4 in my 37 pickup with original chassis with no problems. I have not run the exhaust on my panel yet but I'm using a set of ram horn 283 hearders on it but I believer a set of headers would be low enough to work on the 52 panel.....someone else may be able to answer your question better than me. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 17 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 17 | Sliding under my truck during mock up, i quickly realized that there is no room for brakes and exhaust beside the transmission. The long tube headers take up way too much room. I dont want to mount the master on the firewall (for looks) so I am looking at a 90 deg under dash master cylinder and brake booster. Has anyone used one and if so who's do you recommend? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 487 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2005 Posts: 487 | Have you considered moving the master back behind the trans? No Limit Engineering has a kit. Or you could fab it up yourself. Regards, Leon
