I hope to put the water pump back on the '46 tomorrow. What should I use on the gasket? Both sides? It's been a long time since I've worked on the truck.
Radiator's been recored and I've got a rebuilt pump with new hoses.
Thanks, Jacques

What I've done in the past, is, spray the gaskets with metalic silver paint on both sides. I don't know why it works but I've never had any leaks.

Be careful calling yourself a expert, because an "EX" is a hasbeen and a"SPERT" is a drip under pressure.

I do not use the stuff used "in the day". I now use the blue, non-hardening "goop" available in most parts stores (Hylomar Universal Blue).

...on that I usually use a little permatex #2 on both sides. It holds the gasket and seals slight imperfections. Some don't like it because they say its hard to scrap off the engine but hey, how many water pumps do we change on the same vehicle in a lifetime? Just my .02

Thanks for the advice. I hope I can get to it with all the other stuff to do on my rare day off in the middle of the week.

i use nothing but the gasket on the cooling system. there is very little pressure if any and the contact area is big enough to seal well. if need be to check something removal is simple most of the time without destroying the gasket.

I use a little Permatex "ULTRA BLACK" on all my water jacket contact area gaskets to make sure I DONT HAVE A LEAKY ..just a little goes a LOOOOONG WAY in peace of mind and no leakes.
some say DONT NEED IT ...but a little on the face an back of the gasket SURELY CANT HURT...and I have have no green water on the floor under the 52 or my Guna.
take it or leave it.
Just my 2 pennies.

I like Permatex Super 300. It's a dark brown, almost black brush-on liquid that was developed to seal gaskets exposed to 115/145 octane aviation gasoline. It's much more effective than the standard brush-on stuff, Permatex 3D. It's a little hard to find, but I've been very pleased with it, particularly when I'm installing steel-shim cylinder head gaskets on high-compression race engines. The .023" steel gasket seals compression very well, but it has problems with coolant seeps sometimes. The Permatex dries it right up!
