1949 216 ,W1 carb rebuilt
3100 chevrolet

seems after sitting ,there is no gas in bowl,at least that is what it is acting like.

A little gas manually into carb and starts then dies , could the fuel be leaking out ?

this sounds to me like the fuel pump has quit, or the filter is plugged, if its been sitting for a while the filter maybe plugged with crap gas.

I would take the pump out and pump it by hand, if it works, maybe the needle in the carb is stuck open, any gas in the oil ?

You could just un hook the fuel line at the carb and see if the pump is working.
The glass bowl is just a strainer/seperator really.
It doesn't have a sintered bronze filter inside the carb inlet does it?
It doesn't take much to plug those.
Maybe the float is stuck in the full position and isn't allowing any more fuel in.

Is this a repeat problem? If its every week or so that you try and start it, its most likely nothing to worry about. Hows it run once its started? The modern gas we run now evaporates much quicker then the older gas did. My Mono-jet will dry out after two or three weeks.

Joe H is right, the gas of today is CRAP. What I do with my truck (same year and carb)is with the ign. off push the starter pedal for a few seconds, then switch on the ign., pull the choke out full, pump the gas pedal 3 times and push the starter pedal. If it dos"nt start, pump the gas pedal 1 or 2 times more and try the starter again. I do this every saturday in the summer.

Like andy says, remove the fuel line from the carb & crank the engine. A strong squirt of gas should come out. If so check your float & needle valve. Some Carters have a tiny screen in the needle valve that can get plugged up. If there is gas in the bowl but the accel. won't squirt you have something wrong with the accel. pump.

What is the school of thought around a simple in-line electric fuel pump? My truck does the same thing and it seems like it takes a while to re-prime and then it is fine.

thanks,
I think the metering rod jet assembly is wrong and fuel is going by.

Looks like the metering rod jet assembly is wrong, allowing fuel to drain out of bowl.

Since that is an area untouched, I can only think that somewhere down the line the correct metering jet assembly was removed.

Now to find a matching rod and jet assembly for this.
