The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Getting started painting

The weather here has been so ungodly hot this summer that I've been finding it hard to get anything done but am out there every day that's tolerable, about 2 days a week at best. Working at this slow pace I have managed to get the interior and my DOORS painted. Color is Seacrest Green.

I bought a Devilbiss Starting Line set of two HVLP guns (making a total of five different HVLP guns I've tried) and must say they work pretty darned good. One is for primer with a 1.8 tip and the other I used on the doors is a 1.3 tip and man what a difference from the el-cheapo ones I've gotten at HF and a traveling tool show!

The atomization and evenness of the fan was excellent and the Nason Single Stage Full Thane paint went on smooth and laid down nicely. This is the first time I've actually done any bodywork and I'm very pleased with my efforts so far. My experience has always been fabrication so block sanding and all of the prep work as well as painting a whole car exterior is completely new to me. Although not glassy smooth, it looks like an average factory finish from that era. Very happy!

So progress continues but at a very slow pace. I'm at the point now where I can test fit the front clip. Once I have that done, it's time to paint the cab and fire this sucker up for a test drive.... sans sheet metal.

It is hot here, too. 102-105 every day. Painting is a distance away for me. I am still debaiting attachment of the outer cowl panel. Did you drill holes in the panel then tack it on with your welder? I am using a MIG.

Because I had to bend the flange on my outer panels to it even with the contour of the door I skip-welded the edge of the flange to the pillars.

If your flange is flush against the pillar, drill holes and weld through them.

Woody, that looks pretty darn good. The reflection of the picture taker, and the truck, look like they were painted on to as door art!!

It's not perfect. Working outside got me some dust in it and there is a slight orange peel. Both can be color sanded out and polished and I'd much rather be here than have a run.
