OK, well somethings not right; hope you lined up the clutch plate with the alignment tool and clutch fork is where it belongs, same for throughout brg. Next step would be to suspend that trans via an engine hoist through an open door, will save your back and allow for an easier stab next time. Hang in there you'll get er done. I'm also assuming this is same trans that came out of this truck, if not could be a problem.

Another tip would be to screw in a couple long bolts minus there heads for perfect stab.

Thanks for the quick reply, yes it came from the truck, I took it out to fix the cab and all. I did use clutch tool to line up so I think that part is taken care off. I did use engine hoist. You can only put long bolt for left side right cannot do it on right side.

Will try that too

Acording to the photo, the splines have not engaged or the TO brg is not sliding onto the Collier. Put the trans in gear & turn the yoke a little to let the splines mesh with the clutch disc. Make sure the angle of the trans. is the same as the bell housing. Move the clutch fork a little if the TO brg. is not on the coller. You shouldn't have to push much if everything is lined up.

For a right-side alignment-bolt, put the headless bolt into the lower right attachment hole in the transmission. Make sure the bolt can be removed/cleared through the clutch housing once the transmission is in place.

After you have the transmission in proper alignment on the bolts, turning the rear yoke in the transmission (as Wrenchbender describes - transmission in gear) and gently pushing in the transmission should get it in.

.....this happened to me once long ago. I kept "stabing" at it as I was getting frustrated and by hitting the fingers on the pressure plate the clutch had dropped down just a teeny bit and the pilot shaft would not go in. You can tell if that happens by looking at the edge of the clutch to the pressure plate..... It seems I was working on a Ferd way back then?

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Today I had one more helping hands to lift and push and my transmission is in now bolted, clutch working, drive shaft bolted. Now all left is clean radiator, exhaust and initial wiring and fire it up but it seems like may be in a week as I have to like others do the day job and cant work in the night - wife and kid will kill me

Hi guys. New to the forums.. Having the same issue, yet on my I have the transmission in all 4 bolts in, but there is a 1/2 inch gap between the bell housing and transmission.. Not forcing it, but it just won't close up. Have have taken it off and reinserted it 3 times. Something doesn't seem to be lining up. This is the original truck transmission I am just trying to reinstall it.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it lacks a little lining up with the pilot bearing. At this point if I walked and you asked my help, We would have someone hold the clutch disengaged while 1 or more of us would shake and wiggle the trans while pushing it farther in to where it belongs.
Depressing the release fingers turns the disc loose to allow the trans/main drive to float so you can find the hole.
PS; works better in the dark

Spray some WD40 to the cone and put the tranny in 1st gear and slowly turn the tail and slide. The reason sometime you cannot put is because of the weight. Put a longer bolt to conver that 1/2 inch length and use impact wrench and it should suck it in. I have done it before.

Only if thing your tranny is lined up otherwise you would be damaging something else

Went back out last night. Removed the transmission. Checked everything was aligned. Used align tool. Made some bolt pins for the upper left and lower right. Inserted it 3 more times, could never get further in. Always stopped at 1/2 to 1/4 inch. So I bolted it up and slowing worked the bolts in. Never getting the bolts super tight, just snug and then working the next. Used a floor jack to wiggle it and it slide into place slowly.

Hate doing that as I have broken a transmission on a 90's model car doing it, but in this case I had to.
