I just recently purchased a new fuel pump for my 51 1/2 ton. This new pump looks as if it will be put in upside down compared to the one that is currently on the engine. Does the line from the gas tank have to be bolted to the inlet side of the pump that says "IN". Or, does it make a difference. :rolleyes: If so, they sold me the wrong pump. | | |

The supply must be connected to the suction side of the fuel pump. If yours is stamped IN...it leaves no doubt.
It isn't crystal clear which end is up on these pumps...are you sure you have the wrong one.
The pump lever points UP, and if yours has a glass bowl, it probably makes it on top. To my knowledge, this is the correct orientation for the pump.
Internal valves make it direction sensitive.

Thanks for replying. I think I have it figured out. Tell me if I'm correct, the pump lever should be pointing up (which means the "IN" inlet would be on the gas tank side) and the outlet would be from the pump to carb. I think what had me confused is that this 235 engine (from a 1955 model) does not have a push rod. Correct? Other old vintage cars I worked on had a push rod. Also, where can I purchase a glass see through fuel filter, I think I need one of those also. | | |

You are correct...no pushrod, just a lobe on the cam.
For a glass filter bowl, you might try your local auto parts store, or maybe American Classic, which is the sponsor of this great site.
