| | | | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 3 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 3 | This is my 1968 GMC. She's a 3/4 ton with a stepside bed and a rare (for this year model) 305 CID V-6 engine.
The truck is still a work in progress, but is mostly put back together. I have eliminated rusted out areas, repainted the truck, refinished most of the interior, and rebuilt the motor and rear axle. With the help of friends, neighbors, my dad, etc. I have been able to restore the truck to 90% original condition.
The bed is the centerpiece of the truck. My dad and I do a fair bit of woodworking and carpentry, so the wood bed seemed a natural place to really shine! We cut down two Black jack oak trees and had them milled into lumber. We cut and finished the lumber close to original specs and assembled the bed around it. This truck is not finished, but it sure has been a great learning experience.
The truck's history:
My grandmother bought the truck brand new from a dealership in Tyler, Texas. My uncle drove it home, and the journey was fraught with problems! He got about 1/4 mile down the road and the truck ran out of gas! He walked back to the dealership and demanded enough gas to get out of town. After he was back on the road and almost home, the steering wheel started to come loose from the shaft! He had to carefully pull over and tighten it down with a couple of spare tools he had with him.
The truck has always been on the family farm outside of Mineola, Texas. She was taken out of service many years back. Since I was a kid, I have wanted to drive this truck, and restoring it to good condition has been a blast!

Yours looks pretty sweet.
