Personally I have never had problems with the whites but I have not ran any in several years. I will admit that the BIG WIDE whites may be eaiser to scuff than some of the narrower ones. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 337 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 337 | It's been many years since I've owned whitewalls (wide or skinny), but the only scuffing I ever encountered was caused by running into a curb. This is true of both black and whitewall tires. If scrubbing the tires on the ground had any effect on the white rubber sidewall, I would think power steering would be more of a problem since you can turn the tires with ease while standing still.

When you get within 6" or so of the curb, they emit a loud scraping sound thoughout the car. My mom always had them on her 48 and 52 Oldsmobiles, because she was barely 5' tall and had a hard time determining how far she was from the curb. Some people see them as a period perfect accessory, while others think they look goofy. I had them on my 56 Ford years ago, specifically to protect the wide whites. I always preferred the straight wire style since they were less conspicuous, but I don't see any of them on eBay currently.
