I have heard that there were several different sized in-line 6 cylinder engines. How do I tell what size mine is?? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | 62 is the last year for the 235 and is most likely the engine you have being a C10. There is a flat spot on the block directly behind the distributor with numbers stamped on it. Post these numbers and someone will identify the engine.

I just tweaked them down and I believe there was 6 of them. I will double check tonight when I get in, post a picture, and see if I can't locate the numbers stamped behind the distributor. Thanks!! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 544 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 544 | I'll hijack a thread. Have a '48 6100, with i believe a 235. Only numbers that I could find were B53 848 850 above and to the front of the distributor and 3836848 cast onto the head. I've looked at the post on here and at inliners and can't figure out what motor it is. hoping someone can chime in and answer.

That's where I found my 3701481. I've read where you can lay a piece of paper on it and rub it with a dirty, greasy finger and get the number transferred. I hope I'm not spreading misinformation, but I've always thought that a casting like your "B53" gives you the date of casting. B53 = Feb. 5, 1953.
Of course, that only worked for a certain 10-year period. I don't know what they did in 1963.
The 235 in my '48 had a B33 casting (Feb 3, '53). LAQ83376 was stamped on the flat spot behind the distributor. The head was B23.
My current 261 has an A241 casting (Jan. 24, 1961?) in addition to a 3769925.
That longer casting number will give you the engine size.

Most likely 05683IF547. Was hard to read with bad light and dirty cast. Maybe I can get inside the ballpark. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | The "B53 848 850 above and to the front of the distributor" has never been satisfactorily explained/decoded.
The 3836848 head casting code was used on 235 engines from 1956 through 1963. And, as posted by Big Tee, it was also the code on replacement heads for high-pressure 235s from 56 until they stopped making them. The date casting code on those heads would be a clue as to the head being original or a replacement.
