I know that this has probably been beaten to death here somewhere, but I am unable to get the search engine to produce, so here goes. I am trying to add Power steering to a standard steering 1971 C-10. I got a complete set of box, pump, brackets, pulleys, bolts, etc. from a 1976 C-10 with a 350. I have swapped to a long shaft water pump. My engine doesn't have the holes in the heads or the bosses on the intake for this set-up. I am at a loss for what to do now. The original steering box is shot and this seemed like the way to go. Any suggestions?

best wishes,

Les

The bracket for the PS pump normally hangs off the water pump with a bracket mounted to the front of the left exhaust manifold for the adjustment. As far as I know the 70-76 should be close to the same. Not having mount holes in the heads is a puzzler since just about all small blocks had mount holes from about 67. The standard alt bracket for that model normally is located on the front of the right head and water pump and picks up one of the thermostat bolts for the top mount location.

Hey Fred, thanks for the info. Either the truck I stripped was missing part of the PS bracket, (I don't think so,) or I lost it, (possible, but I went back and looked, nobody had touched anything,) or who knows. I have seen pictures of what you describe, but the alt bracket bolts to the water pump and to a boss on the intake about 1 1/2" in front of the thermostat housing. There is one threaded hole in the right head where the ground cable is bolted, and three in the left head in a triangle.
What I have seen matches what you describe but not what I have. Thanks for the input, but nobody at the local speed shop recognizes what I have either.

best wishes,

Les

Les, maybe you need to run the engine number or the block casting number to make sure what engine is in it?????

Les,
There are a couple of different alt brackets. It sounds like the one you have mounts to the manifold which doesn't help if there is no corresponding mount hole. The other one mounts the same way on the water pump but picks up the right thermostat bolt. The other pieces are a small angle bracket that mounts to the rear of the alt. A dog leg bracket that mounts with 2 bolts to the water pump and a long 3/8 bolt that screws into the head. I have seen the brackets at swap meets in chrome so they must be in the aftermarket.

Hey Fred, Thanks for the input. You got me started on the alt brackets and I found the one you mentioned before. at a local parts place. There are also two different "dog leg" brackets that are slightly different lengths. Once I get the new upper alt bracket I'll match up the proper "dog leg" and that's a done deal! Many thanks. I have discovered that I only have half of the ps bracket, however. I need the piece that allows for adjustment and bolts to the front exhaust manifold bolt. I have found another after market type that will work with the lwp and the Harrison pump, but it is $70 that I really don't want to spend. Time will tell.

Thanks again,

Les

Les,
If I remember correctly the PS adjustment bracket also incorporates a mount for the AC compressor on some models. I think I would attempt to fabricate a bracket before I paid $70 for one though.

Hey Fred!

I solved my problem today! I went back to the salvage yard today and belly crawled under the truck I stripped with a flashlight. Lo and behold, there was the bracket on the back of the cross member!! I was sure that it had been there and I must have dropped it when I was taking stuff off. Fresh paint is drying as we speak on the bracket, which is NO way worth $70!

Thanks for all your help,

Les
