Background: 57 3100 with 235. Upgraded with Langdon's HEI distributor, alternator, Offy intake, Holley/Webers (water heated), Fentons, glasspacks, new wiring harness from Chevy Duty.

I was out for a drive a few weeks ago and the engine stopped like it ran out of gas. The gas guage registered 1/4 tank. After several minutes of checking things out, she started again and ran about 1/4 mile before shutting down again. I decided that maybe it was out of gas so I called home for a rescue. After about 15-20 minutes of waiting, I put the new gas in and started the truck and drove about a mile home without incident.

Later in the day, I decided to go out again. I drove about a mile and the truck stopped again. This time I noticed that I was able to 'feather' the carb and keep it barely lit. As soon as I stopped that, she quit. Again I walked around checking fuel in the bowl and wiring and didn't see anything. After several minutes she started again and I started for home to figure this out. She went another 1/4 mile or so and quit again. This happened 2 more times and then I just couldn't get it to start again. There was fuel in the settlement bowl but there was dirt in there. I took it off and cleaned it out. I blew through the filter and it was clear.

I walked home and let the truck sit for several hours before going back. The truck started right up and ran for another 10-15 minutes before quiting again. Again after 10-15 minutes it started and ran another 1/4 mile. (I'm starting to see a pattern here.) This happened twice more before it stalled again backing into the garage.

I was about to swap engines so I started pulling everything apart and decided to deal with the problem on re-assembly. So; what do you guys think my problem is? I assumed it was in the fuel but I'm not so sure now. Is it in the HEI? I did test the vacuum from the new 'double pumper' fuel pump and it's pulling about 8".

jerry , my 52 with a 235 in it drove me crazy with some stop running habits,, for a while I just ignore it because the truck would always start back up but die when ever it wanted to.. finally got real bad so I had to get serious to find the problem, mine would die on the hiway at hiway speeds.. I could turn of the key, turn it back on it would resume running,,

anyhow........the problem was in my MALLORY ELECTRONIC MODULE I have the no points one.. I replaced it and no more problem,, not saying this is your problem but..........I had checked mine module out before like they stated and I found it to be ok but it wasn't............this may not help you but mine use to do some crazy stuff and now it is fixed..........mine use to stall often or in a few blocks after start up, just stopped running, use to stall when I would shift gears, usually into second, use to stall when I would acclerate hard between shifts,,, all kinds of weird stuff that seem to be fuel related........it wasn't though,, just something acted up in the electronic module.. sorry to ramble one... but I am glad I found my problem.........good luck

Do you have a non-vented fuel cap?

I've been wondering if the problem is in the HEI distributor. I may replace those parts and see what happens.

I also wondered about the gas cap. I don't think it is vented. However, I removed it and still had the same issue.

I think there's a blockage in the tank. Sounds like only enough fuel is getting through to run for a limitted amount of time.

I agree with 48bigtrucks. It sounds like the fuel tank has rust and corrosion "flaking" inside the tank and this is stopping the flow of fuel. The same thing happened to my '47 F%#& sedan until I removed the fuel tank and cleaned and sealed it. Good luck

This sounds reasonable. However, wouldn't my sediment bowl be empty? It was full of fuel.

It would still be full, your carb wouldn't be able to suck the fuel from it since it's on the pressure side of the fuel pump. If the pump is pulling against a blockage, nothing will move,

To me, it sounds like a fuel issue.

Check your tank, and makes sure there's no crap in your sediment bulb. Try a new filter element while you're at it.

If any crap got past the filter element, your carb might be plugged up. This is a long shot, admittedly, but it's worth a peek if you've exhausted all other options.

My money's on the gas tank or the filter.
