so, i acquired this truck several months ago and finally got around to registering it. the previous owner had registered it in his name and then supposedly non-opped it in 2007. i went to AAA to do the paperwork, mainly because its easier and they are open on saturdays. the lady helping me said that the system locked her out of this transaction and that i have to go to DMV to do the transfer, and all fees need to be paid in full. furthermore, the fees owed are over $1500.00 ! ! ! anyone have any clue as to why this would be??? can i get out of any of it???

thats aweful, I'm no help but I feel your pain. Good luck.

Is part of the high registration cost the high GVW of the 6400? If so, maybe you can register it at a lower GVW or reg it as a passenger truck (in oregon that now goes up to 10,000 gvw) when I need more weight carrying I purchase a trip permit and come out way ahead.

I'm going to the DMV next week to find out what i can do. i got the truck for free, so spending the money isn't really a problem, but not having the money to spend is.

I will be watching this tread to see what they tell you, as Washington States Gov seems to mirror California’s and if they think they can get more money out of its citizens we will be right there with you in the blink of an eye.

Are they trying to nail you for back fees since the truck hasn't been used for 3 years?
Not sure about your state, but in Minnesota we can sign a form stating that the vehicle has been in storage or in non use or whatever. Then we don't have to pay the fees for all of those years.

Most likely it is back fees, if you play it right you can sometimes get a form to have the owner explain why it was not done correctly and the fes might be reduced, it depends on the person waiting on you, they all seem to think they know iut all and won't go out of their way to help.
And when you get it straightned out put a historic plate on instead of a commerical unless you plan to work it.

Any vehicle that isn't registered for a period of time in CO must have the registration fees and license fee's paid for the period it wasn't in order to get the current year plates. So even if you have no intention of using a truck or car it is usually less expensive to keep it current so you don't have to fork it all out at once. The big downer on all this is that you must show proof of insurance too that now they've got you in a double whammy. And the liberals wonder why everyone is so fed up with government! It's totally outrageous.

Texas has no such regulations. I have some jalopies that have been out of service for years. If want to register them, all I have to do is show proof of insurance. If they are 25 years old, I can put antique plates that are good for 5 years for something like $25. Modern vehicles can be taken out of service too and registered again as long as you haven't been cited for driving with expired license.

Don't get me started on those bleeding heart tree hugging tax and spend left liberals! Makes my hackles rise and sets me to snarling.

Here in California, our yearly registration fees have doubled, mostly because of left liberal Republican governor Muscle Head. Many businesses which rely on a fleet of vehicles, especially trucks, have folded and gone under. Diesel rigs are becoming extinct here because of a new California Air Resources Board (CARB) rule. Almost all companies which run diesel big rigs, like shipping companies, are moving out of California.

Anyhow, when we registered our 1948 GMC 3 ton, California wanted $2,300 in fees. My girl took to cussing in her native tongue, Choctaw. Some of her words made me wince. The DMV boy was just confused but he could tell she was wet-hen mad. Had to grab her to keep her from jumping over the counter then pinching the head off of the young DMV boy wanting our hard earned money.

Smart girl, she told the boy what he could do with himself, took a hold of my long hair then dragged me out like I am an ape man.

She found some rules in the DMV code book which worked for us. One is a form which allows you to request waiver of penalty fees. Other is an exemption for some fees if owned by a government or by a charity. Our truck was an old Navy truck donated to "Kars for Kids" charity.

She went back to the DMV, demanded to talk with an office manager, in English, then set about making such a headache of herself, made the boy repeatedly call Sacramento to check on rules, caused such a ruckus for a couple of hours, the DMV finally conceded and reduced our fees from $2,300 to $1,000 mostly just to be rid of my crazy Indian girl.

Most important form for fee reduction is a "Request For Fee Waiver", some title like that. Only need to state a good reason, hand this form over to a manager for signature. Worked just great, but I think her waving a tomahawk about may have helped a bit.

Pays to go through a DMV rule book to find rules the DMV will not tell you about. There are many exemptions and waivers the DMV will never mention just to be mean. DMV employees really dislike the public but probably not as much as we dislike them.

Forgot to mention, California DMV will not tell you this, there is a form to state the gross vehicle weight. Select "10,000 pounds or under" and this will save you a bit of money each year. Not gonna share the gross vehicle weight of our 3 ton GMC, the California DMV is probably in here reading looking to raise more tax money to pay for those high class callgirls our left liberal legislators are so very fond of.

We bought a square mile of raw land up in northern Nevada to escape California. With recent political events and our bad economy, we are now looking to move back to Texas where everyone drives old real steel pickup trucks and wear cowboy boots and hats. That Rick Perry over in Texas is our kind of good ol' boy.

Probably will end up moving back to our tiny hometown in Oklahoma, just a few miles north of the Red River bordering Texas right next to Arkansas. I mean, Texas is really just Baja Oklahoma.

Normally, taxes are crazy here in Maryland, too. But they are decent on historic vehicles -- 20 yrs or older can get tagged for $25/yr. The best deal is for 60 yrs and older, a one-time payment of $50 gets you a permanent plate, good for as long as the vehicle stays insured.

Do they still speak English in Texas?

These stories make me cringe. Government in action. HAH! However, when I got my '49 in Nebraska, it hadn't been tagged in five years. I got insurance and drove it to my tag office. I think it cost less than 70 bucks for an Oklahoma tag. There was a problem with the vin number and the lady at the tag office even told me how to get around that problem. Too cool! People may make fun of Oklahoma and its "backward" ways....but I'm often gald to hang my hat here.

John, there is still a little English spoken in Texas, but I think its becoming a rarity. English was my third spoken language. I had to learn English when I started school. Once I mastered English, I started learning Spanish. That was almost 60 years ago. I never knew how important knowing Spanish would become.

Dave, I have 30 trailers titled and registered in Oklahoma. That saves me 6 1/4% sales tax when I buy them and about $280 per year in registration and I don't pay property tax on them. The tag agencies are all helpful. I kind of like Oklahoma myself.

Taxing nightmares. I hope I don't have that much trouble when I finish my restoration and put my old truck back on the road.
Here in Ohio you mainly have to watch which DMV you go to. Some are much nicer than others. When I got my truck 2 years ago I planned on tagging my 47 2-ton with regular plates but when I went to the DMV I found out I couldn't. Had to go commercial. They asked my what I would be hauling I said "mainly myself." So they sold me 6000lb GVW stickers which were about $89 a year. The lady at the desk assumed that 2-ton ment it weighed 4000lb empty. I knew better butI kept my mouth shut. So I drove around for a year with a truck that empty was overloaded. When I started the restoration I just let the tags expire. I hope they don't charge back fees in Ohio.
