This is my first post as I'm a new member. Question: I recently bought a new 6v alternator for use with my 1946 1.5 ton. I have decided to convert to 12v. Can I take the alternator to an electric shop and have it changed over to 12v? I really don't want to buy a new 12v Alt. and be stuck with a 6v I'm not using. It would seem that the only conversion you would need to do would be to install a rotor with a 12 volt field winding instead of the 6 volt one. The stator shouldn't require any alteration. Is it internally-regulated? If so, the electronic regulator will need to be changed, also. Jerry

I converted my Two 1947 Willys jeeps and I'll never go back! I keep my vehicles period except for the 12v conversion. 12v items are less expensive than the 6v counterparts. The 46 truck needs to be rewired as the old is in pretty bad shape. If I'm going to rewire, then I'll go ahead and convert. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 210 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 210 | I bought it from "Jim Carters" and I think it came from a place in Kansas. It's written on the box. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 210 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 210 | That's a good Idea. It would probably cost me more to convert it than to buy another one. The 10SI has a 12:00 position for the DA plug. If you think you may have a 6volt rotor (never seen one) hook an amp gauge to a 12 volt battery and touch each lead to each of the slip rings on the rotor. your amp gauge should show about 3-5 amps. a 6v rotor would draw twice that at 12v say 6-10v. then find a good used rotor or new, let us know what you find. | | |
