I was looking at an AD truck today with a grill guard. The inner bracket are welded to the chassis, is that normal? Or should the grill guard be attached with bolts and not welds? It is a large, probably aftermarket/custom grill guard.

No - it is not normal to have it welded to the frame. It kind of looks looks the Smash Hit grill, but instead of being made out of tubing, it is made out of 1/4" x 1 1/2" plate.

Lots of folks used the flat metal and built there own to their liking. I would think that it is home made from the photo as well. It could be, but the photo does not show, very well, the way that the guard is curved to fit the truck. If you look at the photo closely you can see how the bottom is curved down in the center, and the whole guard is curved back on the sides. So if it is one of a kind, it was made by a skilled metal worker in a very well equipped shop. When you look at it, it appears to be professionally/factory made. My feeling is that it is not one of a kind.
