Info: full pressure 235 with adaptor plate and 1954 216 water pump instead of short water pump, T-5, 3.42 rear end

I went to the local salvage yard and raided a 1941-1946 big bolt for heavy duty (3" instead of stock 2") radiator. I also got the water pump because I wanted the six blade fan.

I cannot get the fan off the pump. There is a large thick bushing on the shaft in front of the fan. Is it supposed to be part of the fan or a separate piece?

With the four bolts out of the pulley I can rotate the fan but the bushing stays tight with the shaft. I removed the back plate from the water pump but I cannot drive the shaft out of the fan/bushing with a punch. Any ideas?

Also, the master parts catalog says that the six blade fan is "for low speed operation". I assumed that the six blade would be better than the four blade. Maybe I shouldn't use the six blade for a half ton. Any ideas?

Thanks,

About the only thing I would do is to heat it up. Being that old, it is probably rusted on the shaft.

Is it possible there is an allen screw in the bushing holding it on?

On the fan blade, I've seen a few old fans shoot a blade through the hood! I'd buy a new fan just for safety sake and hang the old one on the wall.

I took off the seven blade fan that was on my truck and put on a correct 4 blade unit.

To get back to the problem..I would first give the fan/shaft assy. a good shot of PB Blaster let is set over night if that doesnt free it put a little heat to the fan via a accetalene torch till red bought 1/2" from the shaft to expand the fan assy. and release its grip on the shaft.
just my 2 pennies.

What looks like a bushing is part of the pulley. The fan has a center hole about one inch in diameter.

Wow. Lot's and lot's of ideas. Thank you all.

I did try heat but only with propane. I did the PB blaster a dozen times. No allen screw. I had ground off a little bit to be sure it wasn't mushroomed.

Sooooo. It's part of the pulley? Well duh. That would makes sense. I will try that tomorrow.

Again Thanks to everyone!

What Dave said.

The bushing is part of the pulley. Try just heating the thinner metal of the fan all around the center hub.

I was working on our '40 this past year and had the same issue getting the fan blade off when replacing the water pump. I took the pump off and got it in secured in the vise and then sprayed things with penetrating oil good. The I used a small amount of heat with a torch but was careful not to get so hot that I overheated the water pump shaft. A couple of heat and cool cycles along with a couple soakings of penetrating oil it came right off. I still have the old pump and going to have it rebuilt. Good Luck Don

Thanks for the tips. I have the pump off and will try your methods. I will be getting the rebuilt pump from napa today, so i can take a look at it to see what is the shaft and what is the fan so I know what to beat on.

Once I saw the new one, I could see that the center shaft and the collar both came with the pump...nothing with the fan. I drove a putty knife between the fan and the pulley from every direction and it came off easily.

FYI - Scott
