Just because you have a few Craftsman tools, it dosen't mean your a craftsman.

A steel hammer, even if you put the nuts on, may damage the threads.

Glad I didn't have to hammer them, cause they were tight! Thanks for all the tips....BTW, Joe H got any pics of that 3 carb setup? Does it perform good? I'm putting a 250 in my 40 and just picked up an Offy intake with 3 carbs, just wondering what to expect.

One of my friends has a machine shop with a number of automatic screw machines and has hex bar drop offs from 3/16 to 2.5 inches in brass, aluminum, steel, and stainless. The drop off is the last bit of bar that won't chuck up in the collet and feed so it is scrap. I get several of each size from him and use my lathe to make bolts not readily available from most fastener places; stuff like some convertible top bolts or bolts with a long shank and just a few threads on the end, or something as common as hood arm shoulder bolts.

While large hex nuts and special bolts certainly are made from hex stock, most standard bolts and screws are made from round stock and "cold headed"...a forging process that makes a strong, accurate, CHEAP head (hex, socket, phillips, countersunk, etc.). It's all about mass production and minimizing waste. If you can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver, you need a bigger hammer.1965 Chevy C10 | | |
