For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 | I recently purchased a new door control. All the pictures in catalogs look the same but it looks like to me that the controls are made wrong. The original plate that attaches the control to the door is triangular in shape and the apex of the triangle is at the top. On the new one the triangle plate points down. It looks like it would mount but only with two screws. Has anyone purchased one of these recently and found the same thing or am I not looking at this correctly? Thanks.

The door handle hangs almost straight down +/-10 deg. The top screw is directly behind the actuating rod. Look at this original 49 I just dragged home maybe that will help. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2748886530102454676HMqzcH | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 | My control will work if I put it it that way. If you look at this link from the '47 shop manual you will see that the rod that connects to the latch is parallel to the door, not angled. Did Gm change this some time between 47 and 49? http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1947truck/47ctsm0107.htm

I will look in my cab manual and see if it is mentioned since that book was originally published with the new trucks. All the later trucks I have owned 5-1950's 2-1949's 1-1952 1-1953 2-1954's have been configured like the 49 shown. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 | I decided to check the manual for 48 to 51 and the control is configured as you said on your 49. My handles open the door when you push them forward. I'm assuming that on later models you pull the handle towards you (or towards the rear) to open the door. My owner's manual shows that on the 47 you pull towards you to lock the door and push forward to open the door. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0112.htm

I think I'm reading all the info correct but if not here is MY story. When putting in my door controls on my 52 Panel I found that one of them "just didn't work right". I notice the "triangular" problem and found out what appeared that someone used two controls but they were for the same side.... on my "bad" one the door handle worked backwards and I could not get the lock to work. Sooo, I ordered a new one and put it on like it was suppose to be and the problem solved. I think I paid $19 for the new one.
Not sure if any of this helps but here's to hoping your problem makes more sense now. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | In early 1949, the inside door handles were changed to be pulled to open.

I will probably buy another control for the other side so that both doors will operate the same (i.e. pull back to open; push forward to lock). I can't seem to locate a control specific for the 47 and 48 (although the catalogues state that the controls are for 47 to 53)

The originals actually have a stamp "X" and "O" on some of them for driver/passenger side and then I have had a couple with no stamps. Puzzle wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 | Finally got around to addressing this. The mechanism that the handle attaches to on the driver's side controller (which I purchased), is the same as the original on the passenger side. I took off the original control on the passenger side, separated the mechanism from the backing plate and put the new mechanism on the old backing plate (the triangle shaped piece). The 'rod' that connects to the door latch, however, is too long so I have to cut out about 1/4 of an inch and get the two pieces welded together. Then I will take the splined shaft from the old passenger side mechanism and put in the driver's side (which was the problem all along because the splines on the driver's side were worn.) Sounds a bit convoluted but in the end I will have a door handle that will work the same way it did in '47 (and it won't fall off every time I shut the door or hit a bump!)

Bout every one that has pulled their doors apart has asked the very same question. The "remote control" triangular mount IS mounted with the three screws. The early ones had the link running parallel to the opening. They were changed mid-year in '49 for what ever reason is anybody’s guess and one is as good as the other. Regardless of the reasoning, I don't think they wanted to retool the inner doorframe so it was left as is and a fiber pad was glued to the frame where the rod crosses over so it won't rattle. The link sitting at and angle was how all of the later ones were till the end of the run. This is the way the later ones should look, yours should look like the one in the lower part of the illustration. Sounds like they sold you the parts for the later trucks. There would be no problem with using the "remote control" from the later trucks on your doors other than the direction that the handle moves to open the door. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/121651878 http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/121651890 Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

So I guess I got the only part that is available. Sorry, I suppose I didn't search far enough back. Thanks.
