I have a chance to buy a 54 1/2 ton 5 window, rolling chassis, no bed, cab good, 235 stuck, 3 spd on colum, good wheels and tires.....$400.

If the frame is solid and the cab is good, sure it’s worth it. If you really want a drivable Advance design truck your going to have a minimum of four to five grand invested. In your case a brand new bed from Mar-K wood and all, will run you under two grand delivered. Glass rear fenders about two hundred each plus shipping and the rear is done. The engine if it isn’t blown could be completely rebuilt for around three thousand. Now, does it have the front clip??? All of that is available new also. Then again you can keep your eyes open for used parts and do it for a whole bunch less.
I wouldn’t bat an eye at spending $400 for a good 5 window cab, unless someone had started to butcher it. The corner windows and frames alone are worth a couple hundred even if the rest of the cab is wasted with rust.

I think its like Denny said. It's hard to find anything but a pile of junk for 400 bucks. I seen higher prices and I wouldn't even want the thing.
But no matter what the initial cost,one has to figure the amount that will have to go into it to make it into what you want.
Which is what I did not do when I bought my Big Bolt, and I had no idea that just the brakes alone would set me back near a grand.

Assuming it's complete only missing the bed, and not a bucket of rust, and like the other guys said, if it hasn't been butchered, dash is intact, $400 is a fair price. I enjoy the hunt for parts, finding a bed for a "54" could be tough.

I'd want to know about the paperwork. If it includes a matching good title I'd say it's a good value. Otherwise it's just parts.

does it come with a title? no title and the price is about right for a parts truck.

You can pay more for just the cab

If you have room to keep it, grab it. You might find something better later on, but you will get $400 in parts in no time. Another thing nice about a parts truck is that if you are assembling one and don't remember how it fits, you have an example.

yes $400 is a good deal i have a hard time finding parts for my 41-46 chevy/gmc trucks i buy about all the parts trucks i can find and that is about what i pay for them.thanks
