Is that possible and if so, does that suggest a bigger problem than just replacing the head gasket?

If you really suspect that, the plug should look very different from the rest. In addition unless you had a huge hole in the cylinder wall, you would not find accumulated coolant, even on one with a leak. | | |

If the motor wasn't blowing white smoke I wouldn't worry to much and if it was it's probably the gasket. Unless you over heated it or froze the block you shouldn't have a crack.
