I finished installing and bleeding the brake lines and master cylander on my '40 GMC. Problem is I cant get much response when pressing the pedal unless I pump the pedal. I have bled the lines and can see no problem there. The system has a new rebuilt single cylander master. What am I doing wrong or is this typicle of these systems?

You just apply pressure. Each wheel has 2 adjusters. They both are right hand threads so turn in opposite directions. It,s hard to understand which way to turn the starwheels unless you see a wheel cylinder. Adjust each adjustment till you get a heavy drag. Then back it up 2-4 notches. If you still have a low pedal you may still have air in the system. Make shure the pedal has a little free play before it starts pushing the master cyl. piston. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

just chiming in on what red and W.B.R. said. I messed around for days until I opened the shop manual and figured out that I did not have the brakes adjusted correctly.
I adjusted as described above and they worked like a charm.

Then I bleed them until the air is gone. It will give you a better idea of how much air is still in the system when you know the brakes are already to their limits. Sometimes you'll need to adjust your master to pedal linkage too, Scott
