Look at post #417 for a '66. There are plenty of smooth pre-'66 rear shots as well in this thread. 66 C-10 rear fender | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 141 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 141 | ........Woogeroo's is a '65. However, I have seen pictures of an earlier 60-66 truck with a long bed step with the side mount and the indented fender. I'm pretty sure the side mount on the step side was an option. When I was a kid, my cousin had a '64 short step with that indentation on the fender. It all depends on how it was ordered I suppose. The other location for the spare is under the under the bed.-W | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 141 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 141 | Thanks, Woog. We were talking about the indented fender for the reverse lights, not the spare tire indentation. Guess I should've been more clear in my post..........
My '64 is a short step with the spare indentation, and the parts '66 has the much sought-after full drivers side rear fender, no spare indentation......debating on wether to use it or keep my original; I'd have to do some work on the frame, since I didn't plan on using the under-bed spare. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,893 Socket Breaker | | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,893 | They had an indented area for the reverse lights on the back end of the rear fender?
I know the reverse lights were an option earlier... and became standard in 1966. I thought they just had a hole in there for the wire and the screws/bolts? Hmnn. Ya learn something new everyday.
I think the highway act of 1968 or so... I think it was passed earlier ,but it was to go into effect that year... I think... made all vehicles have reverse lights, blinkers, two tail lights, plus some other things on the cars and what not to do with highway construction.
But yes, my fenders are smooth... 1965, the reverse lights were still an option and my truck is very, very basic.
My bed is actually in better shape than the rest of my truck.
hah!

The fender I bought at a swap meet had screw holes holes and a "circle" in the paint from where the back up light was for many years. It didn't have an indent. But I really haven't a clue about the real vintage of the fender. So here is a thought: Woogeroo eludes to the reverse lights being an option prior to 1966. Is it logical that prior to 1966 if you ordered the optional back up lights they were simply bolted to the fender, with no indent on the fender? Then when they were a "standard" part in 1966 that Government Motors, sorry I meant to say General Motors, modified the fender to have a flat spot to mount the light? Anybody got an original 1960-1965 with the optional "factory" reverse lights on the fenders that can answer this quandry? John I didn't really need a "correct year fender" for my truck. I modified the fender anyway to accept 1964 Impala taillights. But, for me, knowing the history of how the factory built these trucks is a big part of the fun of the stovebolt hobby. Here is a photo of the Impala tail lights on the fender, looks like it was meant to be, IMHO. http://s645.photobucket.com/albums/uu176/lakeroadster/?action=view¤t=65C10June65.jpg

Is it logical that prior to 1966 if you ordered the optional back up lights they were simply bolted to the fender, with no indent on the fender? I would venture to say that is a logical statement. I can't see why they would have fenders that were stamped for reverse lights waiting on the shelf to see if anyone wanted the option, but I also can't see why they would retool for '66, when they were already drilling them at the dealerships for optional; seems that they would just drill them at the factory as they did at the dealerships. But, I guess a guy doing nothing but drilling holes in rear fenders would get kinda expensive.........prob moreso than just retooling. I will try to get a pic of the '66 fenders I have with the indent today, if it ever stops raining down here.......sheesh..... | | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 | I see said the blind man..... I was surfing ebay looking for examples of 1966's with the stepside back-up lights and found this... (look at the third picture in the series) Sure enough there are those "one year" '66 fenders you talked about. I learned something today.. I never really noticed that before.
I always noticed I did not care for how I saw the stock ones on the '60-65 ones. They always looked like an afterthought to me.
On that '66 there it looks alright.

I took pics of mine this weekend btw, but forgot to upload 'em......... | | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 | Bkndsdl, You might be on to something. If you look in the Gallery , specifcally at '66 stepsides, you will see only (1) example of a fender mounted spare on a '66. http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery/isherwood_arnie_1966.html and that may not be the original fender? The plot thickens I sent Ernie a private message, maybe he can shed some light on this. John

I'm sure that a lot of those fenders have been swapped, and that info wasn't passed on to subsequent owners. | | |
