There should be a cable coming out of the trans housing that hooks to the carb. Is the cable still there?

It should hook to the throttle linkage for the kickdown. Like Big48 says the neutral switch goes on the shifter. Therte is a kit available that goes on the trans near the shift lever. It can be used for neutral or backup lights but not both.
