I'm new to the 64 -66 chevy trucks. Would a 72 250 with powerglide (from a 72 pontiac ventura) bolt right in to one of these trucks? The 250 has side engine mounts on it. If so what kind of gas mileage should I expect? I'm not very familiar with the powerglide transmission.

This would be a good question for lilred66 , i'm sure he will chime in on this question.

If it's a Chevy engine it should be almost a direct bolt in with maybe a few minor exceptions.

What size engine is in it now? If it is a 230-250 six cyl. it will bolt right in. The gas mileage depends on what rear end ratio it has. It will be somewhere in the area of 15 mpg.

Wrenchbender, I have a 62 now that I am going to sell for parts (no engine). I am in the market for a solid 64-66 shortbed to restore so I can't answer your question. I posed the question because I may be able to put my hands on a strong running 250 with powerglide out of a 72 ventura. 15 mpg does not sound like much for a six cylinder. I want to put a 283, 292, or 250 in the truck with an automatic transmission but I also want something that will give me decent gas mileage. What engine and rearend gears would you recomend? I do have someone that has offered me what he says is a good running 283 with a powerglide for $500. I believe he said the engine and trans came out a 67 or 68 malibu. I appreciate your response!

I think I would get a truck first & then see what you need in the way of engine. The 63-66 are great trucks. Almost any engine -trans fit them. It is also easy to change rear end ratio,s. The ratio you want to use depends on engine size & tire size. Also you need to consider what you are going to haul or pull. I had a 63 with 454 & o-drive auto. trans. Neat truck.

the powerglide won't give you good mileage.id try to find a 305 and turbo 700r4.

The '72 250 motor does not have the tabs on the front of the motor to fit up to a truck/car that uses the front mounts like a '55 Chevy. I believe '69 to '72 were all without front mounts. Before you jump, check out your intented truck to see where the mounts are. I didn't and now have a '72 boat anchor in my garage.
