I rebuilt the brakes with new wheel cylinders, etc. and after some initial trips around the block have a leak in left rear cylinder. It is leaking out of the "boot" on one side of the cylinder. Any tricks to see if I screwed up the install or is it just a bad cylinder?

Did you get a cup in backwards or pinch it putting it in? You might have some dirt in it. You just have to take it apart & see if its something wrong.

#54896 01/13/2006 9:16 AM | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 112 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 112 | Did you use any type of lube(W-D,P.B BLST,etc.)before install'n the cups?If so take it apart and spray carb cleaner or something to clean and dry it out good. reassemble it with no lube,I did the lube thing with mine 3 or 4 times before i cleaned it,dry'ed it and just put it together,no leaks yet,(KNOCK ON simulated WOOD grained comp. table!)

New wheel cylinders are supposed to be bolt on and go.

Once apart see if there is any scars inside the bore and if OK go to the parts store and simply buy the rubber cups. Some stores still carry just the cups and you don't have to buy the whole kit. The cup size should be on the back of the ones you take out. If the inside bore is pitted any you will either have to hone it and see if it clears up or replace the entire wheel cyl. It really sounds like a "cup" problem and new cups would be cheaper than postage the thing back to where you bought it and have to wait weeks!!! | | |
