most diffs are open meaning all the power is transferred to 1 wheel, the one with the least resistance,ie one wheel on the gravel, one on pavement, the gravel wheel will spin.Good for driving in wet or in town where there is lots of corners, etc.Hence the one wheel peel!A positraction puts power to both the wheels at all times and a locker will lock up both wheels when one spins.

a posi does not put power to both wheels all the time- hence the term limited slip. there are clutches involved which will lock up when requiren
now if you welded up the spider gears you wood have a locked rear endand both wheels drive constantly and evenly, which would make it harder to go around corners.
a locker allows you to lock them up by you when required

there are various type of rear axle setups and he is referring to positraction which is a limited slip rear axle w/clutches in it. it is not a constant 2 wheel drive rear axle.it will engage in certain criteria( all he understands that if he stands on it in a straight line both tires will smoke.that is one of the criteria). you would not want to drive around with both wheels driving constantly as it is a pain turning with it.
you could check under the parts for sale here as someone may have a used one that you could rebuild and install (oiginal equip). you should ask a few of them that are in the bus. of selling parts.
you may be able to still by a new unit.
you should be able to buy a detroit locker for it and there are other makes out there

Hey 65,
Check into Mosier or Currie for a bullet proof rear diff. They are beefed up Ford 9" rears custom made to fit your needs. I put one in my brother in-laws 55 Shoebox and it has held up very well,

Cost depends on how it's built, mild to wild. The one I installed was built for a 383 stroker with 3:55 gears for about $1200.00. It was complete with covers, paint, brakes and drums,

Well not that expensive i guess. Now, the day i realised my truck does the 1 wheel peel i tried to see what my rear end gear ratio was. Do both wheels have to be off the ground and the truck has to be in gear or something? Cause i tried it in neutral with one off the ground and came up with 1.25:1 or something which can't be right since the smallest in '65 was a 3.07:1. Any tips?

hey there pull the rear diff cover off and divide the small number off the crown gear into the big one.Ill pretty much be guessing they are 373 ratio, seems to be the most common ratio for these years.

This would be the easiest way to get a locker type rear. no swapping of the carrier, just swap out the spider gears. Much less setup, and the cost is lower. Plus, it is a true locking diff, not a limited slip.
