There is a hole in the center at the rear of the bed sill. i no this is for the J hook for the spare tire on 3/4 tons and may be bigger. Was this hole there on 1/2 tons and not used or should this not be there at all.

Yes there is a hole on half ton trucks in the same place. The underbed carrier was changed after about 1950 or 1951 and the hole no longer used in that location but might still be there on later years.

Panels may be different.... my 52 half ton panel utilizes two cross pieces that the stuff hangs from.
