I have a 49 GMC with at 125-1/4 wheel base and I have a spare rear-end that came out of a truck with a 116" wheel base. I am guessing the torque tubes are of different lengths. If I need to use the spare rear end under my 49, can I take the torque tubes off and switch them? And on top of that, one is a Chevy and one is a GMC, wonder if that makes any difference?

I have never had to take a torque tube off a rear-end before and have never ever seen the driveshaft out of the tube.
[email protected] thanks.

Whether you think you can or can't, you're right.

Also--in 2004, I invented the spotting alert network in stovebolt after seeing so many trucks when driving around. So that means I am cool.

Your profile says the '49 is a 3/4 ton. Didnt they come with the open drive shaft rear end?

If it's a 3/4 it should have an open drive. Most driveshaft shops can fab a new one with the correct yokes and length.

"He may have a half and half driveshaft? half open half closed?"

Yes, front side closed, back side open.

The only way to use that 1/2 ton torque tube rear would be to remove the third member and swap in a '55-'62 1/2 ton third member to get to open driveline.
