My shop manual is for a 51 with a 52 suplement and it was silent on removing the tranny first. Unless someone has some other advice I think removing it would be the fastest way out.

I assume it is a 4 speed. On the other hand it is not really all the difficult to unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing and leave it in the chassis. Either way would work OK. | | |
