I am going through this with the left door of my '63 right now. If I come across the ultimate fix I'll be sure to post it.

You get those doors in a strong wind and it is amazing what kind of force they can swing back with, so I could easily believe that it could spring the hinges. Add in the fact that the door is constantly opening too far (if the door check is still bad) and it could have caused problems with the hinges.
