6 months ago I bought new 16 inch tires for my 40 1/2 ton. Now I am going to change out the rear end for a 52 powerglide to get a better gear ratio. The 52 has 5 hole 15" wheels and I want to keep my new 16" tires and wheels. There is not enough material on the axle flange to redrill the larger 6 hole pattern. Does anyone have a better idea? I know I could buy yet another rear end from a 48 or older car but I am trying to avoid the expense and the work of doing that. Thanks for any help. Dale

I know this has been done but suspect that you;ll need to first weld up the 5 holes and then redrill.

The bolt circle on the axle is 4 3/4" and the 6 hole circle I want is 5 1/2". The axle flange is only 6 1/8" wide. That only leaves 1/16" of material outside of the bolt hole. I called Moser Engineering and they said redrilling was not possible. I suppose they may be concerned about product liability and I wonder if it would work if I could find a machine shop to do it. Provided that your rims are properly fit to the hub, the lugs only hold the rim to the axle. All of the radial load is on the hub. There is no radial force against the lugs. Therefore, I can see no reason why re-drilling would be a problem.
