Greetings from Port Angeles WA!

I've got a Chevy 52 2 ton that I've been using for a manure hauler for 15 years or so. Last October a small fire under the carb turned into a very large one that fried many of the wires and hoses on the right side of the engine compartment. The only way I could put it out was with the manure I had in the bed! It worked but I had to keep stuffing it into the carb and batting it with my gloves to get the fire out! Man was I sweating! It burned hot and melted much of the insulation and wire of the paint off the outside of the hood. I was thinking about giving her up for good but the other day I figured I'd try to bring her back to life and spliced in some new wires and clean up the carb.

It runs, moves and dumps but runs very rough! Here's my question. The carb sounds terrible at idle but will ramp up as I give her the gas. Could I have fried some of the components inside the carb with the fire? What are the chances it is rebuildable and or would I be better off with a new Rocherster B (pretty sure). Someone posted a web site in the forums where I could buy a new Rochester but I lost the link?

Any advice from a few veterans would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Doug Hendrickson

Never say die with these old trucks. Looks good on you for persevering. I'm not a veteran with advice, I just want to welcome you here. Perhaps you could ask in the engine and driveline forum.

Welcome to the Bolt. Your at the right place. There is a couple good carb men around that can help you. I'd put it in the ENGINE forum and you'll get quicker and more repsonses.

I would recommend taking it a part of a good cleaning and put a new accelerator pump it and be sure to check the float levels. There are complete kits avaiable.
Thats my opinon but the pros will chip in later.

Many times I wiah I had a dump truck.

Hey man do not give it up. There is nothing that can't be fixed on that truck. Start with the carb. and bypass all the wiring at first to get it back in running condition. Then one by one work on the wiring and such untill it's back in shape. Take your time.

Hi Doug, firstly welcome.

Sounds like you had a scare with that one!

This is the first time i've heard of poor running due to cr*p in the carb.....literally! wink

As Alvin said, try posting this in the 'Engine' section of the forum. It'll reach more folks 'in the know'.

That little carb is easy to o-haul. Get a kit at the parts store & a can of carb. spray. There are only 3 wires on that side. You can splice them but make sure you use 10 gauge wire from the starter to inside the cab. You can get a set of plug wires at the parts store & replace them one at a time so you dont mix them up.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
