Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 11 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 11 | I've been lurking for a while and wanted to add a few humble pictures. I purchased Judy, a 53 GMC pickup, several weeks ago. Luckily, I live in Nevada, where we can work on her outdoors about 50% of the winter days. My family and I have pulled out the rotten upholstery, wire-wheeled the lower part of the cab, cleaned and vacuumed several times, primed and painted the seat assembly and gas tank area, and pulled the glove box door and speaker grille off the dash. The advice I need is this: will paint stripper melt the plastic ash tray handle and the steering wheel? They both have a lot of layers of paint on them. I've looked in several different spots here on the forum and there seem to be several different points of view. Anything definitive? 2-20 Pix of Judy, the 53 GMC truck

Sounds like you got a good start on it. Lots of nice folks here and information.
I would not be afraid to put some stripper on the ash tray handle but I would not leave it in it for a long time. These knobs are also available from the vendors and not very expensive.I THINK yours is Maroon due to the Korean war and "bright" metal was not used....although chrome repops are available. I think you can strip it and then maybe have to polish it back out.
EDIT: I even LIGHTLY sand blasted one and was able to polish it back out but its best to keep it in as nice of shape as you can!
