No.s next to distributor on block are FI2ISJC. ON cylinder head they are 3836848 GM16

1956 235 head casting number 3836848

The 235 head, 3836848, was used at least 56'-60' I believe.

F121(S),(probably a 5)JC decodes as a Flint engine built on Dec 15.
The engine serial number suffix 'JC' appears in a 58' and 59' list of GM engine suffixes and was a Thriftmaster "235" with 3 speed transmission.

this engine right now is in a 1960 k-20 so i was trying to figure out if it was the original engine and if it was a 235

the 848 head was also used to replace the stock heads on 261 motors for a simple inexpensive increase in compression. does appear to be a 235 though. if it is an early 60 truck it may be original, if that is the question.

Look for the block casting number on side of block. Also look for "Captains Bars". It is possible that you have a 261 which were available for the K20 then with an 848 head. Block casting numbers would really help ID it.

3769716 is the block casting code for a 58-62 235 truck engine.

Where on the block did you find b48848850? Was the location as shown at photo #4 at the link above? If so, that code is a mystery?

i dont remember exact loation of b488488850 was near distributor. can i assume this to be original engine

It looks like an engine that could have used in a '59 or '60 truck. Did you check the head and block date casting codes (locations are shown at the link I posted above).

A late 1959 engine (block and/or head) could have been originally installed in a 1960 truck.

235 Block casting 3769716 (could also be listed as 3739716):

Truck - 1960-62 Mech. Cam, Front Center Mount

The 261 engine 1960-62 is block casting 3769717

Thanks everybody for the information much appreciated.I am starting the restoration of my truck and am almost ready for the engine, transmission, transfer case to be sent to be rebuilt.
