Been banging my head against the wall for the last couple of hrs, searching and searching all of Al Gores internet and have not been able to come to any kind of conclusion as to this engine.

Had an old guy tell me he thought it was a 250 yesterday but all be dipped if I can code it out like that.

Here is what I know for sure. It was rebuilt recently along with the tranny. It is in my recently acquired 49 Chevy.

Casting number 348675

stamp number F0322CC ?? I need to pull the distributor (which by the way is a big cap HEI?) and sand more to see if I am missing something.

Are the motor mounts straight across from each other? If so, it could be a 194, a 230, or a 250. If the right side mount is offset toward the rear, it's a 292.

Motor mount is behind the fuel pump, so it's not a 292.

Thanks for the replies guys!

That is a later HEI distributor that you have, its from a late 70's to mid 80's truck. The side covers rule out it being a 292. You're off to a good start not having the integral head on there.

Big Chevy, I think my grandfather's '84 C-10 has a valve cover like that one, and it has a 250 in it.

All I could find was that it's a 1966 through 1985 250CID. Maybe someone with a newer book could decipher the stamped code,

My book says the 348675 # is for '66-'79 250. The HEI is the external coil type used in '75-76.
The hole on the top-front of the valve cover is the oil fill hole. The one on the side should have a large tube that goes up to the air cleaner. This is the fresh air inlet for the PCV system. The PCV valve is already in place at the rear of the valve cover with the vacuum hooked up to it.

Thanks a lot guys, you have gotten me a lot closer than my hrs of research had gotten me! The 5 in the date code could nail it to 75 if your HEI theory is correct and the HEI is not a transplant.

Thanks Chuck! I had already poked around your site before but without any kind of mid point to start with this engine, I was having a hard time nailing it.

I pulled the distributor hold down and got the rest readable, it has served to only confuse the issue more.......

F0322CCT

I am unable to come up with a CCT at this point.

You are looking at the serial number, that won't help identify it much. You need date codes, pull valve cover and check the date code of the head. At this point, it won't mater anyway, we are almost 100% sure its a 250. All parts for a 250 will interchange through the years and you have the best head going.

GM block casting 348675 is an Oldsmobile 250.

Well that kinda throws a wrinkle in the works, but I guess it doesn't really change anything??
