Guys,
Ever since I got my truck I knew I wanted to make it look like an old service station truck. Every car show I've been to in the last year I have been looking for old trucks with signage on the side to get ideas. It took me along time to finally come up with what I wanted but I finally made my decision (sorta like a tatto...spend the money putting it on better like it...). Well, I was on the internet looking at old serviced station signs and saw one that I knew when I saw it the search was over... "Johnson Gasolene" sign. Never new there was a Johnson Gasolene Company. Check out the sign (bought me one of those too) http://www.goantiques.com/scripts/images,id,1066974.html
I can't find any history out about this company but I think it was around during the 30's and that is the correct spelling for that era. My last name being Johnson just sorta helped make the decision.
Well a couple of my buddies had a friend that done some work on their cars so last week we got the ole truck painted up! Man I love it!.... had some pin striping added to the hood and below the back glass. I also had Charley (painter) put my stovebolt name on my tailgate over on the right side..the truck looked awesome when he finished. He painted it to look like it had been on the truck for 50 years. Go to my link and let me know what you think. Drove it around town yesterday and saw people really checking it out. Everybody seems to really like it. Wife likes it so I am stoked!
Later drive

P.S. When I see my ole truck now I think about the old full service gas stations when I was a boy...remember going in and getting STP stickers from the guy behind the counter...stuck them things everywere...those were the good ole days....

I do love the door art, sometimes I wish mine had been left with the original 'patina' and I could have had something similar.

I like the idea of your "Stovebolt handle" on the tailgate. thumbs_up

Maybe you'll start a new craze! grin

I think its cool that there is a story behind why a certain logo is put on an old truck. Some real thought went into you deciding on what art to use. I am currently searching for something for my doors. I hope I come up with something as cool as you did!

FastEddie, I really like your truck. Thanks for the kind words...your truck is setting pretty waiting its door art....hope you find something that makes you happy. I really like your yellow pine. I have a log cabin and I have put alot of beautiful notty pine in it. I had thought about doing the bed in that and doing it myself. You have inspired me.

Jockbolter50, thanks for the comments I am really glad you think it is cool. I do have to admit that my stovebolt handle was an after thought but after he painted it on I knew I was on to something. It is just too cool to have my Stovebolt name on my truck. I had a buddy at work like it so much he asked if I would mind if he put "ole skool Trucks" on his tailgate. I told him it would be okay because he has a Ford.....

This just gave me an idea with what I want to do with my truck. I'd like to paint it up like a dealer truck from back in the '50's when my truck was new. Thanks for the brain jump start! smile

Looks good on your truck.... hand painted, way to do it right.

What kills me is these guys who try to add an "authentic touch" to their truck with a vinyl sign.

CZechman, that ain't ole skool....wouldn't even considered doing that. No way to get that ole worn look with a sticker or graphics. I really got a kick out of watching this fellow. He said he had been hand painting on vehicles for over 30 years...does it full time. Amazing to see someone that talented free hand that art on my truck. drive

Im glad u like it RATRODKING. I'm absolutely thrilled with it. One of those things when it's done u wouldn't change it for the world. Glad u dig my wide whites because I knew that was the look I wanted but cyphered on every other way to get that look without spending the money....researched painting them, porto-walls, cutting them....finally broke down and spent the cash 235/75R15 from Diamond Back....best dollars I spent...took the ole truck up several notches....like he's ole and alittle rusty but he's got class cool.....he's respectable now...I can tell he's proud of them cause he just carries himself different sorta like he sticks his chest out when there people lookin.... thumbs_up

Achipmunk, I have had several comments left from guys that really like that my name was on my truck...bet it won't be long and other guys will put theirs on to. I think that would be cool...sorta like back in the day when we rode around with our CB radio's... I had my handle on my window so everybody would no me. If you were out and ever saw someone's truck that belonged to stovebolt, you would know who it was by there stovebolt name. Then you could log onto stovebolt and look up there stovebolt name and contact them. Does Stovebolt sell stickers that you can put on your truck window?
I am sure that JDL is out getting a quote on having "Possum Pickup" painted on this weekend! that would be cool...man I hope if anyone else does this I would love to see there pics. drive

The worn out door art just wouldn't work on mine,I DO admit I considered vinyl (sorry Czechman!) but common sense/taste prevailed! big_eek

I do want some pinstriping though, done the traditional way. I've even considered getting some sword brushes and some 'one shot' and having a go myself. Would need lots of practice before going near my 'bolt ! nono

You should go to Youtube and type in pinstriping, there's a load of neat stuff!

Woody (Czechman) has a door art site...Why not a Tailgate 'handle' site? (Just a thought) thumbs_up

Jock, head over to the HAMB and do a search on Pinstriping. If there is a good place for traditional how-too, that would be it. Here is the link http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search.php?searchid=5187529

Just saw OLE SKOOL's truck in person yesterday. The photos don't do it justice. Man what a nice truck! thumbs_up

My Dad, Bluedawg Sr., said "That will be a good looking truck when it's painted..." He's nearly 70, and doesn't quite get the current barn find look. I guess there's a difference between HAVING to make do, and CHOOSING to make do. wink

Thanks Bluedawg for the nice words...but I had a great time meeting your father....he is the "real" ole skool guy. I really loved seeing all the old trucks and cars he had setting out on the farm. That old wrecker was cool too. Your Dad was a really neat guy. thanks for inviting me over.

My 37 will be getting some door art to but it will be in a agriculture theme since it came from the family farm and the original owner was a farm supply company,I could see it through the layers of brushed on barn paint but could never read it except for the truck number. I am going to do it just like it was but use the family name instead of the company name. Jeff

That looks great! You gave me an idea maybe... my Dad owned a service station back in the 70's, it would be a nice tribute to him to put the name of his station on my old pickup. After all I got the love of these old trucks from him. I like the idea of the bolt handle on the tailgate too!

Man I like that ole Chevy sitting in the snow! That looks like a really nice original. I am glad you like my truck and I think your idea would be really cool. To have your Dad's service station on the side of the truck would really be a tribute. I think if it were me I would get a thrill out of people asking about it and getting to tell the story. I do think I have started something with the handle on the tailgate....alot of others have commented that they like it too. Maybe we can get the stovebolt editors to start us up a page were everyone could show there door art and name on the tailgate. Make sure you send pics when you get it done.
