Hello everyone. I hail from the frozen Northwoods of Wisconsin. I have a little confession to make, I am a Ford guy. Had an old 77 Ford I drove the snot out of since High School. The transmission blew out a few months back and the frame is missing a foot long section. Any way I had been looking for a truck for a while and I stumbled upon a 1951 GMC 3/4 ton on Craigslist for $750. I called the guy and found it had a good running inline six and a solid frame. I took a look at it and indeed the motor runs well, but it does need a lot of help in the cab department and it suffers from floppy fender syndrome. The bed is missing the wooden planks. I got the guy down to $450 and now I own a big red truck. I have always liked the looks of the split windshield 'bolts. I am planning on getting it driveable and solid enough to use for some work around the place. I'll admit I have no clue about these old trucks. I have had nothing but AMC and old Fords up till now.

I am curious if the GMC's used the same engine as the Chevys. Seems there are plenty of parts for the Chevy AD trucks but none for GMCs (according to the local AutoZone.

There are actually quite a few big AD bolt's around here. I think there are three within 5 miles of my house and a few pickups. Those Advance Design trucks must have been quite popular back in the day.

I'm not sure but I know "some" engines in the GMC's are 228 and 248......I think! Some experts will be along shortly.

Welcome to the site. So you converted from Ford to GM? The GMC's had a completely different line of engines for many years, I think they're even slightly longer. They had 228, 248, 270 and 302 while the Chevies had 216, 235 and 261. I think this all ended in 1963 with the newer sixes.

Congrats on the GMC.

Post the engine number that is pressed into the boss/ledge n the block, to the rear of where the distributor enters the block. Someone will be able to tell you if its a Chevy/GMC engine and the size of the engine. If the engine is original and standard, it would most likely be a GMC 228, if your truck is a USA GMC. If if is a Canadian GMC, I think that the engine might have been either a GMC or a Chevrolet engine (someone will correct/clarify this, if it is incorrect).

In all years, Chevrolet Advance-Design trucks were the truck sales leader in the USA ( sales back to 1927 ).

If you have trouble finding parts locally, you can find many part numbers here. (it takes getting use to their catalog)

Just went and got the old beast. I used my parent's Astro van. Not my first choice for a tow vehicle but it was the only thing available.

I looked under the hood, it says GMC on the valve cover. Which are better? The Chev sixes or the GMC ones?

Chevy and GMC motors are both good,but then again we're biased!

'Bout 4 hours south. I was up in that area this last summer. Would like to go up there again to do a little boating around the Apostle Islands. Maybe with a 'lil elbow grease (more like a whole 55 gallon drum) myself and the red GMC and my free boat will be making a trip up there this year. Probably would be a real slow ride. I am going to guess that the truck probably tops out around 50 mph. I haven't done much to it since I got it home, I think I'll tackle the bed first. It looks pretty easy to tear apart. The Cab will be a toughie. I think this will be a bit more involved than the last floor patch job I did on a Jeep Cherokee. I completely replaced the floor pan on the Jeep, but at least the upper body was good. On the GMC the rust goes a way up the door frame on the cab. Some of you may shutter at this but I think I am going to patch it with some computer case covers. I have a large pile of them laying around and the metal is power coated and galvanized. The cases are quite a bit thicker than the original floor pan. My goal is to have a dependable work truck. I'll have to take some pictures and put them up, and by the way, does anyone have some door glass they want to part with? Both door windows are smashed out.

Welcome fellow Ferd / GMC owner . My daily transport is a ferd but one of my stovebolt stable trucks is my '52 GMC 1 1/2 ton "Toto" . I like the GMC's over the chevys but they are harder to find some types of parts for . Check with Jim Carter classic parts / LMC Truck or one of the many old truck parts catalogs / on-line sites . Window glass is avaliable from them and most other parts . Search the forums archives for many answers . Lots of good help on this site so be sure to ask for it if you need it . ED H
