I hooked up a temporary exhaust out of a discarded system from another truck. I ran it out of the sides in front of the rear wheels. I like the looks and it sounds pretty good standing on the outside but those Flowmasters are a tad too loud on the inside of the cab. Where are you guys running yours? The sides or the rear?

I just came in from working on my exhaust...
It will exit behind the right rear wheel at an angle both back and to the side.

Ran my pipes out the back. I think doing long miles with the pipes drumming out the side you may need a loud stereo. Have taken my truck on several runs recently covering 1100kms or 650 miles in 4 days out the back is the way to go personnel choice

When I had the first 292 in my 67 I had dual tuned headers on it with glasspacks, with both pipes dumpin in front of the drivers rear tire. I couldn't take it on any long trips with out bein deaf in my left ear

I've had mine run right to the rear.
It's a bit tight on account of the Air suspension but as the others say side exits would be tiring on a long drive.
(As much as I like the V8 'rumble!) Plus I prefer the look at the rear.

I might have to adjust the silencers once I get the drive shaft in place to allow for suspension movement and the pipes just clear on full compression at the axle.

Currently mine exits in front of the rear wheels, this spring I plan on taking it to have pipes bent to run it out the rear as it is annoying on a long drive.

Robert, move the mufflers back if you can and get the tail pipes to exit as far back as possible. This will quiet down the sound in the cab. Exiting any where before the rear wheels turns the cab and box into a sounding board. Think of it as having your head inside the drum.

Let me ask you guys that said it's really loud in the cab. Have any of you put an insulaton package inside the cab, floor, doors ect? Would that make a differance or not? Just wondering. Thanks

I don't have any insulation in the cab, Shoot I don't even have carpet or a rubber mat. But the sound is bearable with the window up.

The only time it really gets annoying is when I'm screamin down the interstate at 65-75mph

They have several products that deaden the sound and one that I know of that is water proof. You can find this stuff at the hot rod stores.

Thanks for your replies.Looks like the majority of you guys are running them out back, which is what I'll do when I can get it to a muffler shop. How about some pics pix of your exhaust tips. I'm thinking about the Camaro style.

I got my exhaust guy to leave the tail sections slightly long as I haven't decided wheather to have a rolled pan or to just leave as is. I'll wait 'till I get the bed back on!
The Camaro tips are nice though!

On my 55 with Flowmasters they exit out the back. They arent really loud, but have a nice rumble to them. On my 65 They exit in front of the back wheels with turbo mufflers. I like both setups,so to me its just a matter of personal preference. However I would say, that if your gonna exit them in front of your rear, axle,to use quieter mufflers.

Here's a picture of my newly installed exhaust "tip" really no tip at all, just a 5" pipe.
http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2892389310080251109PyZeSU

The rest of the system is 4" mandrel bent from the turbo to behind the cab. Then 5" and a Magnaflow Stainless steel muffler and some more 5" with mandrel bends to get over the axle.

My 54 3100 has a 283, power pak heads, Pertronix Kit, Rams Horns, and no-name turbos exiting just before the rear wheels. I love the sound of it around town (which is 90% of my driving) but This past weekend I took it Old Town Saturday Night Cruise, about 90 miles one way. That's about 2 hours of 3K rpms...yeah that can get to ya. My solution is an OD transmission so I can go 70 at or under 2500 rpms.

IF the exhaust must exit the rear on a truck.... I like mostly hidden by the rear bumper, exiting near the rear corners and the exhaust pipe tips angles down at about a 45 degree angle and just bearly peeking below the bumper. I'm trying to think of what cars had a setup like what I'm trying to explain. In short, I (this is personal taste) don't care for seeing 2 pipes dumping straight out the back on a truck.

My hope is you end up with exactly what you like to see and tone you enjoy. Good Luck.

My '54 GMC 248 has Fenton cast iron headers, 2" pipes back to Corvair Turbo Mufflers then 2" tailpipes out the back. Hardly hear any exhaust noise except when I get on the gas hard in 1st or 2nd gear, nothing at all inside the cab at freeway speed.

2" pipes w/Dynomax mufflers straight out the back under the roll pan with chrome blunt tips. Those Camaro tips might look cool.

I've got a V8 and I'm running them out just in front of each rear tire. The downpipes feed directly into an x-pipe crossover just under the transmission crossmember, and then straight into a pair of Thrush superturbo mufflers and then 45 degrees to angle in front of the rear tires and out with a nice pair of Hearthrob chrome tips. 2.5 inch mandrel bent aluminized pipes all the way back too. My headers are '86 Corvette shorty headers.
