Hi. My name is Chuck. I have a 1949 Chevy 3100 Factory 216, Granny 4-speed, all stock. I've had it about a year, and haven't done much with it yet. I bought it while I was living in Reno, NV, and have moved back down to So. Cal. and bucks are tight. I drive it with a cracked block, and she still gets me around. I am looking for a new engine. I am planning to lower it someday. I have put straight pipes on the 216. She sounds GREAT!
I can't wait to get started here. Have a great New Year!
Chuck

Welcome Chuck, it's great to see people keep the old inline sixes in their trucks. I'm still building mine but it has the six with the old 420 4 speed. I hope you like it here; I'm sure you will.

What is a 420? I'm looking for a 235 to replace my 216. my 216 has a crack under the 6th cylinder. Water leaks out very slowly and I'm just waiting for the crack to get to long.

thanks.

Hey, nice to have you aboard, Chuck. The "420 4 speed" is explained rather well at this page.

Chuck, my engine is an inline six. I took out the 235 for a 261. The transmission is known as a SM420, SM is synchro mesh and 420 is the model number of it. It is a heavy old 4 speed with a granny gear low. More info on it is available in the driveline forum.

It sounds like the 420 is my transmission, top loaded with a granny-gear. You said you put in a 261...how did you do it? Thanks for the info!

Chuck, we better move over to the 'engine and driveline shop' and make room for more newbies in here. That way others can help out as well. There is actually a thread there now titled "getting started and need your opinions" Just jump in.
