I have been scouring Craigslist here in Texas to find a 64-66 truck and when this one popped up, it said for sale or trade. I had a 1985 Pontiac Fiero that was a fun car but lately I had the yearning for having an old truck, so I emailed the man who owned the truck and he said he would be interested, so I ended up with the truck. I could see the bit of damage that rust had done, but of coarse I guess you never really are able to tell until you start really poking around on the body. After seeing the damage that was along the drip rails I almost decided to look for another cab, but then I thought that even if I found one and the top was in good shape there might be rust lurking under the roof skin where you couldn`t see, and with the skin off my current cab I can get rid of the rust all on the top and treat the metal. Plus, my cab is a big back window and the rest of it including the rockers seems to be solid. I am determined to make this cab the best I can. Well, here are some pictures of what I`m working with. http://www.picturehosting.com/images/AUSTIN64/img1516.jpghttp://www.picturehosting.com/images/AUSTIN64/img1517.jpghttp://www.picturehosting.com/images/AUSTIN64/img1518.jpghttp://www.picturehosting.com/images/AUSTIN64/img1524.jpghttp://www.picturehosting.com/images/AUSTIN64/img1519.jpg | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 | That is a nice truck you got, even with the skin off the roof. I've seen many that were rusted out up top like that. Be sure to take pics as you go along with the roof. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Have fun with it and good luck on your project.

That is gonna make one nice ride. Keep us posted. | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 59 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 59 | Thanks, guys. I have done some bodywork before, but mainly fiberglass and filler, so this metal forming and mig welding will be new to me. I want to use as little filler as possible. One thing that`s great about these trucks is you can get almost everything you might need from either Brothers or LMC truck parts. The only thing I have to try to avoid is using replacement parts instead of cleaning up old parts to reuse. They make it too easy to use bright and shiny new parts. | | | | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 191 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 191 | That is a nice looking truck, here in Ky, they seem to start rusting at the top and bottom then meet in the middle LOL. Good luck with it. Atleast these old truck are all metal and ya have something to weld! | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 59 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 59 | Thanks Rob, fortunately as far as I can tell the rockers and the rest of the cab on mine are in pretty good shape. Now, I just have to get someplace to work on the truck because I don`t have a garage. I`m going to buy one of those portable garages because our weather is usually pretty mild here in Texas. | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 | Metalman has made a repair panel for the area over the windshield. Working *that* way is a lot easier than emailing back and forth, trying to get info on a truck. So, we should be able to keep this up. AND ... I think we have help coming. Peg
