It smells of and has evidence of old gas in it so I'm assuming it worked for some prior owner. If it's working it should be OK but I would change it to be on the safe side. If the diaphragm is weak you could end up walking. I believe 37 through 51 all used the same pump configuration as for how it mounts to the engine and the pump lever shape.

The 1937-1955-1st single-action fuel pumps were/are interchangeable.
