You've probably already learned this, but that pump on the front is a Barton U-40 (maybe a U-50), 400 (or 500) gallon-per-minute job. Sold by American Fire Apparatus out of Battle Creek, Michigan (no longer in existence). You've also got their vacuum primer under the hood on the fire wall, a pretty cool little bit of engineering to prime the pump using manifold vacuum.
I've got some manuals and schematics of the pump, if you need 'em, when you get to it. I've got a couple of these pumps at my place, one's on a '41 Chevy. I love talking about 'em, so message me if you want.
Congratulations!

Hope to get the truck home on Saturday late and then I will have a better idea as to what I have . The old owner knew almost nothing . When I asked for the wheel base and get the reply - it's 7ft - you know better than ask anything more about the truck . I'll take plenty of and post them . There is a '60's Ford CO fire truck about 24 miles away .Could'nt get it ( tho she sure was perdy ) I'd get run over by Toto and the old chevys - multible times no less. They Just tolerate my ferd PU as it is and TOTO has yet to forgive me for having to Carry a found-on-road-dead all the way to KC and back ( lol) . Heck your truck is just over one hour away from me . Sure wish mine was there and yours was in Iowa ! Ain't I just the nicest cuss ? It was perfect with gold leaf lettering and all. I flew up there one way and drove it all the way back to central Texas.........what a memorable journey!
Enjoy yours!

Ed - I know mine does not drive yet, brake pedal went straight to the floor sounds like you got a good chance to drive it as is.
I don't know about you but now that I have this firetruck I have to figure out what to do with it. I guess I should have thought of that first... | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 238 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 238 | Guys like us need No brakes - just throw out the anchor and it will snag on something sooner or later . And as to what to do with the truck - I have plenty of ideas - work it as a back up fire truck during the pasture burning season ( the local RFD's like that idea )- partnering with the local department and RFD's for fire safety programs at schools - near the bottom of the list is run it in a parade the last is restore it and admire it as it sits . If I can't work my trucks what good are they to me ? Ed H | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,746 24601 | | 24601 Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,746 | Oh man, I can see it now, Ed... One dark night outside Wamego, Kansas, a fire started inside the local chemical plant and in a blink of an eye it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments for miles around. When the volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the Chemical company president rushed to the fire chief and said, "All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved. I will give $50,000 to the fire department that brings them out intact." But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in as the situation became desperate. As more firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer was now $100,000 to the fire department who could bring out the company's secret files. Still no takers. From the distance, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was a 1950 Chevrolet fire truck crewed by some local farmers. To everyone's amazement, the little run-down fire engine, operated by these old codgers, passed all the newer sleek engines parked outside the plant...and drove straight into the middle of the inferno. Outside, the other firemen watched as the old timers jumped off and began to fight the fire with a performance and effort never seen before. Within a short time, the old farmers and their Stovebolt (owned by their chief, Ed Hoover) had extinguished the fire and saved the secret formulas. The grateful chemical company president joyfully announced that for such a superhuman feat he was upping the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave, though, elderly, farmer firefighters. The local TV news reporters rushed in after capturing the event on film asking, "What are you going to do with all that money?" "Well," said Ed Hoover, the old fire chief, "da furst ting ahm gonna doo is fix da brakes on dat dang truck!!!" oldie, but still a goodie! John

I would have bailed out long before I would have drivin into the fire ! I've spent time in a burn ward before and beleive me NO amount of money would get me to do that ! Road rash yes - burns NO . But that was a Great story. FYI the fire dept.'s name is ; The OZ Volunteer Fire Brigade. "The home of the Firefighting Flying Monkeys of OZ" ! How's that for a mouth full . And just think of the T-shirt possibilitys. A flying monkey wearing a Leather fire hat and fire coat - holding a hose in one hand and a fire ax in the other . I just Love it .
